Member Spotlight: Mark Falconer

How long have you been a member at Ballard Health Club?

I have been walking down the ramp and stairs for close to twenty years.

Why do you work out?

My cliche answer is to stay in shape. Really, it’s because I am in my late fifties and getting closer to turning 60. I notice my body is starting to work a bit harder and my muscle stiffness lasts slightly longer. I have to work a little harder now to stay in shape, but I enjoy the sense of community at BHC and being with other motivated, healthy members.

When you are at the gym, what do you do to work out?

I always seem to end up on the treadmill at some point during a workout for a quick run or a cool down as part of my routine. This summer, I was introduced to Kyle’s Total Body Fitness class when our daughter Annabelle was home from college. She had met Kyle while checking in and was asked to join his class. She was so impressed, she got the whole family to join. We spent the summer as a family popping in and out of his weekly classes transforming ourselves into a healthier family. As an extra bonus, I have been attending Mariah’s cycling classes peddling at full speed or climbing hills for an intense leg work out.

What at BHC has worked for you for attaining your goals?

The classes that BHC offers have always been a motivator to stay in shape. The staff that I have had a chance to work out with throughout my many years here have been so inspiring and friendly.

Why do you choose to work out at BHC?

BHC members are like an extended family. Everyone is friendly and excited to get in their workouts, as I have heard many conversations in the locker room and folks bantering about their workouts or what’s ahead for their day. I personally have met a lot of people in the classes or in the gym all trying to fulfill their daily routine. It’s nice being a part of the exercise groups. Hand clapping, fist bumps and all.

What is your favorite piece of equipment, exercise, or class to do in the gym or at home?

My favorite class is, “Total Body Fitness 60” with Kyle (and also Rachel and Colton). I have become a regular attendee with my wife Kim and have gotten to know and recognize other members while attending BHC throughout the week.

"I have fond memories of walking down the ramp from the street to watch concerts in the early nineties when the gym was known as “The Backstage”. During my free time, I am an avid soccer fan and urban sketcher, creating art and painting around Seattle. If you see me at the pub watching a game, on a bench or leaning up against a post with a sketchbook in my hand, stop and say hello. "
