The BHC Community Beyond our Walls

4/30/24

Dear Members,

As you have seen from a prior email announcement, we are having our 26th anniversary celebration on May 1st with lots of activities for our members. Many of the prizes for our anniversary come from local businesses. We greatly appreciate the spirit of community that our local merchants have shown, and I ask that you help us return the favor by visiting them soon.

The local businesses that have contributed to our prizes are:

  • Annie's Art & Frame

  • Ballyhoo Curiosity Shop

  • BEGIN

  • Blendily

  • Buffalo Exchange

  • Horseshoe Boutique

  • India Bistro

  • Kavu

  • Lil' Woody's

  • Majestic Bay Theater

  • Market St. Shoes

  • Matador

  • Salt & Straw

  • Secret Garden Books

  • Woodland Mod.

Following the theme of community, I want to share news about a successful collaboration with another neighborhood establishment – Leif Erickson Hall. Leif Erickson is the local branch of the Sons of Norway, and it is found next to Banner Bank. There is a strong Norwegian heritage in our neck of the woods, and the Leif Erickson Hall is the base of that following in the Ballard community.

When we were re-opening after COVID, Karen Gamble, our class director at the time, and I wanted to improve our Silver Sneakers classes. Previously, the classes were held in Studio X. The space was cramped due to the number of attendees and equipment. Having previously attended an event at Leif Erickson, I was aware of one of the large rooms in their event space that was 3 times larger than Studio X.

We approached Leif Erickson about the idea of using their Hall for our Silver Sneakers classes. As it turned out, they needed additional parking for their weekend events. We were able to reach an agreement to use their hall during low usage times in the morning for our Silver Sneakers classes and Leif Erickson would have access to our parking that is lightly used by our members on weekend evenings.

With this arrangement, our Silver Sneakers classes have been able to accommodate more seniors who want to get physically active and enjoy the camaraderie of this community. (It helps that Lief Erickson has a café that is open 9am-3pm on Wednesdays and Fridays).

If you are in need of an event space, please consider using Leif Erickson Hall (www.leiferiksonlodge.org)

Thank you for being part of the BHC community that, as you can see, expands beyond our walls.

Sincerely,

Pat Gilbrough
